Veteran and service dog plan promotional visit | News

HIGH POINT — Want to meet a military veteran and his service dog?

Retired Navy veteran John Fleming and his service dog, Mercer, will be at the High Point location of Sport Clips Haircuts in the Palladium At Deep River shopping center, 4112 Brian Jordan Place, Suite 109, from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday. The visit is one of several promotional visits throughout the Triad this week to help bring awareness to faithCares, an organization that assists with providing service dogs to veterans with PTSD and/or traumatic brain injury.

Fleming, a senior chief petty officer, served for 23 years in many areas of conflict during three tours. Upon discharge, he was diagnosed with leg and nerve issues and post-traumatic stress disorder.

In 2015, Fleming was matched with Mercer, who assists when Fleming is experiencing nerve issues or symptoms from his heart condition. According to Fleming, Mercer helps reduce his anxiety, stress, anger and depression, even awakening him during nightmares and flashbacks to help calm him down. The dog also alerts Fleming to people approaching from behind so he won’t be startled.

All of Mercer’s costs are covered by faithCares, including training, food, supplies, veterinary care and more.
